How to change a QR code's destination without reprinting

Already printed a QR code that points to the wrong page? Here is what you can and can't fix, and how to avoid it next time.

If the code is static

Bad news first: a static QR code cannot be changed. The URL is the pattern. Your options are to reprint, put a sticker with a new code over the old one, or set up a redirect on the domain you own (for example, make /menu forward to the new page). The redirect trick only works if the code points to a domain you control.

If the code is dynamic

Log in to the service that generated it, find the code, and edit the destination URL. The change is live on the next scan. With SwitchQR this is a single field on the code's card in the app; hit Save and every printed copy now goes to the new page.

Make the next print run editable

Generate the code from a dynamic QR service before you send artwork to the printer. Use the SVG download so the printer can scale it without blur. Keep the label meaningful ("Spring menu, table tents") so you can find it in six months.

Test before printing

Scan the proof with two different phones, and check that the destination loads on mobile data, not just Wi-Fi. If you use a custom short domain later, make sure the old redirect keeps working.
